Specific ecological indicators
Parameters such as emissions, generation of waste or use of resources are all directly linked to production. When the specific emissions and the structure remain the same, an increase in production volumes automatically gives rise to an increase in these parameters. Only when the specific emissions (emissions per metric ton of product) can be significantly reduced, do these values remain the same or even decrease.
Some of the objectives of the Bayer Group with regard to its responsibility for the environment are based upon specific indicators that enable it to depict an improvement in environmental performance, independently of any changes in the product volume.
The diagrams below illustrate how the most important indicators relating to emissions, waste and use of resources have changed during the past few years in relation to the volume produced during the relevant year. Changes in production volumes are also shown. Until 2004, figures relating to emissions, waste and resources and the production volume related to the Bayer Group including Lanxess. From 2005 onwards, however, the figures relate only to the Bayer Group without Lanxess.
With the exception of the indicator “phosphoric compounds in wastewater,” all indicators point to a reduction during the past 5 or 3 years. In the case of phosphorus emissions, it is noticeable that almost all of those emissions were caused by units in the new Bayer Group. At the same time, the production tonnage of the new Bayer Group, following the spin-off of Lanxess, decreased considerably Specific phosphorus emissions rose significantly however between 2004 and 2005.
